Obituary

Syrena Raquel Arevalo-Trujillo, 33, of Tucson passed away on April 1st , 2024 after complications sustained by her lungs. She leaves behind her husband, Walter Trujillo; mother, Anna Tarazon; father and stepmother George and Maggie Arevalo; sister, Sarah Arevalo; and 9 other siblings. Along with her paternal grandfather and countless aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Syrena entered this world on September 9th, 1990, to Anna Tarazon and George Arevalo. After graduating from San Miguel High School in Tucson, AZ in 2009 she went to study Mexican American Studies and History from the University of Arizona, receiving a Double Major Bachelors' of Art Degree. Throughout Syrena's life she had two passions: Mariachi and Books.

Syrena's love for Mariachi music started 2004 when she joined Mariachi Pumas from Roskruge Middle School. She continued to make music with Mariachi Los Changitos Feos from 2005-2009. Between the years 2009-2019 she was apart of Mariachi Sol Azteca, Mariachi Viva La Mujer and Mariachi Tapatio de Tucson. In 2012 Syrena was honor to become a recipient of the Elisa Gustelum Scholarship Foundation at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference.

In 2012, Syrena met Walter Trujillo through their common love for Mariachi music. They built their lives in Tucson, Arizona along with their furbabies River and Zeke. Syrena and Walter played together as members of Mariachi Tapatio de Tucson.

During this time Syrena started her journey with a diagnosis of Pulmonary Hypertension. She spent her time spreading awareness of this condition. In 2019 Syrena became a recipient of a double lung transplant

In 2018 Syrena brought her dream to life by opening Barrio Books. Barrio Books started by attending various Markets and pop-ups within the Tucson Community. Through this bookstore, Syrena focused on the accessibility of BIPOC and bilingual literature.

During the years 2015-2018 Syrena was a 6th grade teacher at La Paloma Academy. She cared so deeply about every one of her students and ensured that they always felt supported in her class and as they moved on to the grades that followed.

Syrena's impact on this community will continue to resonate.
