Ramon R. Olivas's Obituary

Our loving father and lifelong Tucson resident Ramon Rico Olivas, 90, passed away September 11, 2014, at his home in Barrio Hollywood. Born November 30, 1923, to Ramon Miranda Olivas and Margarita Rico Olivas. He grew up surrounded by his extended family in Barrio Anita. With such a large family on his mother's side and with deep roots in the Old Pueblo, he often joked that we were related to just about everybody in Tucson. He met our mother, Amalia Yubeta at a neighborhood store and he was smitten. He would get embarrassed every time our mom whipped out the love letters he sent her while he was away at war. He received a Purple Heart during his service in WWII. They married October 28, 1950 at St. Augustine's Cathedral. Their union produced seven children, Lupe, Eduardo, Ramon Jr., Jo, Willie, Roy and Rachel. Dad worked in the civil service as an air conditioning technician at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. He had a very analytical mind and loved science. Later in life he would exercise his brain power by doing Sudoku puzzles every day. He loved working out his body and was in better shape than his kids. He was always walking or on his exercise bike, watching "El Gordo y La Flaca," with his Don King-hairdo on full display. He also loved going to the neighborhood doughnut shop every day to visit with old friends. Dad was a gentle spirit and was always laughing. He was the undisputed king of corny jokes. Thanks for being such a great father, Dad, and for loving us unconditionally. We will miss you and your sweet smile. Our dad is survived by sons, Eduardo (Lilia), Ramon Jr., Willie and Roy daughters, Jo and Rachel sister, Hortencia Romero granddaughters, Cristal, Mercedes and Araceli honorary grandson, Alex and great-granddaughter, Angelina. He was preceded in death by parents, Ramon and Margarita wife, Amalia daughter, Lupe and brothers, Jesus and Gilbert.
