IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rafaela
Grijalva
November 14, 1923 – February 29, 2020
Rafaela Grijalva, 96, passed away peacefully at her home in Tucson on Saturday, February 29, 2020. She was born on November 14, 1923 in Ajo, Arizona. When she was quite young, her family moved to her father's ranch in Sonora, Mexico, where she went to school. She met her husband, Raúl, at a New Year's Eve dance and they married in Tucson in 1947. Together, Raúl and Rafaela lived at Canoa Ranch, just north of Nogales, and had a son, Raúl. They later moved to Tucson and had two daughters, Lydia and Norma. Rafaela was a homemaker, gardener, excellent cook and avid reader who enjoyed discussing current events. She had endless energy and was extremely proud of her home and the way in which she cared for everyone who entered it. She was the matriarch of her family – a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, devoted wife, doting mother, and exceptional Nana. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and was especially entertained by her great-grandchildren. Rafaela was a woman of faith who prayed the rosary daily. She was proud of her family, her culture, and always stressed the importance of community involvement and the power of education.
Rafaela was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, brother and loving husband, Raúl. She is survived by her children, Raúl (Ramona), Lydia, and Norma, and by her granddaughters, Adelita (Sol), Raquel, Marisa (Floyd), Sara (Lameen), Celia, and great-grandchildren, Melina, Adelina, Raúl "Lito", Joaquín, Andres, Floyd IV, Belén and Ruby. She is also survived by her sobrinos consentidos, Nubia and Martín Velasquez and their families.
Although we are all saddened by her passing, we take comfort in the many memories, stories and life lessons she shared with us. She is always in our hearts.
