Obituary

Mercedes C. Antón was born November 5, 1923 and passed away at home in her sleep on August 28, 2022 at the age of 98.  Preceded in death by her loving husband Librado (Tony); parents Juan and Rafaela, and siblings Adalberto (Rafaela), Juan (Celia), and Consuelo (Taul). Survived by her children Victor, Rafael, and Yolanda; Grandchildren Matthew, Kayla, and Jonathan (Bella), great grandchildren Bella and Jasper; her sister-in-law Bertha Banda de Antón of Guadalajara, Mexico and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She came to the United States from Mexico in her 20's, studied English and in 1973 earned her GED.  During her early days in Tucson Mercedes was employed by Faye Creations and later by Casas Adobe Montessori Schools.  Mercedes had an exceptional talent for sewing and could recreate and construct a dress from scratch from a photograph or drawing in a magazine. She was often called upon by friends or family members to refit a cherished wedding dress for their daughter's wedding. Mercedes was humble, caring and a loving wife, mom and nana. Her focus was always on the needs of the family before her own.  At dinners or holidays, she wanted everyone to be well fed and comfortable before she would sit down to eat. Even in her last days at home she would insist we take a break and make time to eat.  Although her health was declining Mercedes maintained a good sense of humor, upon wishing her a happy 98 th birthday last year she told us in Spanish, "are you sure I am not 100 because I sure feel like it".  Mercedes was a devote Catholic and prayed the rosary daily.  We attribute her long-life, personal courage and inner peace to her strong faith.  Mercedes, a loving wife, our beautiful mom, loving nana, Tia, sister, daughter, cousin, prima, comadre, and friend was uniquely special to each one of us and loved dearly. She will be greatly missed by all.

The Antón family would like to thank all our family and friends who visited with mom (nana) after dad passed away and as her health declined. We would like to thank nurse David RN at Casa De La Luz Hospice for the special care and his compassion during his visits. We also offer a special thanks to Father Stephen Watson from Santa Cruz Church who visited and administered communion and last rites to our mom and nana. We know this brought her great spiritual comfort and peace.
