Luis G. Melendez Jr, 81 of Tucson Arizonapassed away on Saturday March 7th due to natural causes while vacationing with his family near Zion National Park Utah. Luis was born on May 16th 1944 in Douglas Arizona to Luis Melendez Sr and Rosa Gomez Melendez.
In his 81 years Luis positively impacted countless friends and family. He used his devout Catholic faith, loyalty to friends/family, strong work ethic and humble personality as a moral compass which guided him throughout his long life.
After graduating from Douglas High School in 1963, and attending Cochise College he joined the United States Navy for 6 years and was based out of San Diego CA. He then embarked on a 43-year career as an Industrial Electrician working in Arizona’s copper mines and after retirement, spent many years traveling the world with his family and parish. Most recently he retired from Tucson Unified School District as a crossing guard near his Tucson home. He was a positive influence on the school community.
Luis married the love of his life, Ana Maria Salcido, in 1969 and together they raised three beautiful children; Dr Paul Melendez PhD., Celina Melendez and Mario Melendez. He is survived by 4 grandchildren (Ryan, Megan, Maya & Violet Melendez) and many beloved, nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters Gloria Flores and Celia Rivera.
Luis had a love for family, church, travel, sports/coaching and serving his community. He will be profoundly missed.
Services for Luis will be held at Most Holy Trinity Parish (1300 N Greasewood Rd, Tucson, AZ 85745), Friday March 20th, 2026. Rosary at 10:30am, Mass immediately following and ending with a Celebration of his Life. Internment of ashes will be at a later date.
