Jose Portugal, 92, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on September 20, 2023
Jose was born in Villa Hidalgo, Sonora, Mexico to Maria Gertrudis Duran Duran and Guadalupe Portugal Osejo in August of 1931. He is one of 11 children. He was a musician in the families band, he played the saxophone and the flute. He got married in Villa Hidalgo to Maria Jesus Romero on December 26, 1965. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Tucson, Arizona with his new wife to begin a new life. He worked various construction jobs, and started a family here. He started a choir group at St. Johns the Evanglist Catholic Church. He taught music to the choir and had several young students whom he taught the saxophone to. Jose was very passionate about music, as it was in his blood; it was his happiness and his peace even while on his death bed. He always ensured the home was full of music. He lived a long and very fulflling life.
His is survived by his wife, Maria Jesus; his two daughters, Maria Urias (Jacob Urias) and Rubicela Knieter (Edward Knieter); his four grandchildren, Tyler Portugal, Savanah Urias, Jacob Urias, Mikaela Knieter; his many nieces and nephews; and his only remaining sister Rosita Valencia.
