With heavy hearts and profound love, we announce the passing of John Michel, 89, of Tucson, Arizona. A devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, United States Navy veteran, and lifelong educator, John dedicated his life to serving others and making his community a better place.
Born and raised in Tucson, John grew up in the Sam Hughes neighborhood, where his love for baseball, education, and his hometown began. He proudly served three years in the United States Navy before dedicating 44 years of his life to the Tucson Unified School District.
As a longtime school principal, John believed deeply in the potential of every child. He devoted his career to helping students succeed, supporting teachers, and strengthening Tucson’s schools. His outstanding leadership earned him recognition as an Outstanding Middle School Principal, and his impact on generations of students will never be forgotten.
Despite his many professional accomplishments, John’s greatest pride was always his family. When asked what he was most proud of, his first answers were his four children, his wife, and his grandchildren.
John was a constant presence in the lives of those he loved. He rarely missed a grandchild’s school event, sporting activity, or special milestone. He was always there with encouragement, wisdom, and advice. Known for his kind heart and generous spirit, John had a way of making everyone around him feel important and inspiring them to be their very best.
When he wasn’t spending time with family or helping others, John could often be found watching baseball, following politics, or enjoying Fox News at full volume, something his family will always remember with a smile. He loved traveling, especially to La Jolla, and treasured time spent with those closest to him.
John’s Catholic faith was an important part of his life, guiding his dedication to family, service, and helping others.
John is survived by his loving wife, Edidtsa Michel; his children, Jacqueline Michel (David), Kristen Pittman (Ray), Johnna Michel (Albert), and John T. Michel Jr. (Roma); and his eight beloved grandchildren, Tres, Jordan, Jacqui, Fernando, Leala, Ariel, Malcolm, and Ansley.
John leaves behind a legacy of love, service, education, and unwavering dedication to others. His influence will live on through the countless lives he touched and the family he loved so deeply.
A funeral Mass celebrating John’s life will be held Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Tucson, Arizona.
His greatest accomplishment wasn’t the schools he led or the lives he changed, but the love he gave and the family he cherished.
Forever loved, forever remembered.
In lieu of flowers John requested donations to the Gospel Rescue Mission.
