Obituary

Born September 8, 1945 in Douglas, AZ lived in New Mexico, Utah, Colorado and California before retiring in Tucson, AZ. Sonny is survived by his wife Jean two children: Dr. James (Maureen) Yanes of Olympia, WA and Jeanine (Jason) Nunamaker of Torrance, CA., He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Sarah Yanes, Laura Yanes, Jude Yanes, Chloe Nunamaker and Reese Nunamaker. He grew up in Torrance, the only son of Guadalupe Andrade Ybarra and Leroy Gene Smith. Sonny is a veteran of the Vietnam war, where he earned several medals including: Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge and Purple Heart to name a few. He served two years as a sergeant 1st Infantry in the US Army. He was wounded twice during his deployment and received other commendation for his bravery, courage and dedication. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest. Sonny attended Torrance High, '64 and Cal State Long Beach and was dedicated to the school and his alumni. After returning from Vietnam, Sonny completed his schooling then went on to work at Toyota Motor Sales USA for over 30 years from October 1969 until January 2000. It was there, that he held many positions starting from the warehouse to the Long Beach Port and finally holding other management positions of Toyota and Lexus. On top of being a dedicated employee to Toyota, he dedicated his time to the Redondo Beach Police Department as a Reserve Police Officer for over 20 years. Sonny was a loyal, hardworking, brave, compassionate, caring, courageous, full of live person. He loved his country as much as his family and friends.
