Gus Rico was born on January 12, 1933, in Tucson, Arizona, to Rafael and Rosa Gonzalez. He passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the age of 92.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Rafael Gonzalez; and his sisters, Sara Espinoza and Mary Gabusi. He is survived by his sisters, Ofelia Foley and Marta Gonzalez; his daughters, Kim Steve and Jennifer Lackey; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In June 1951, Gus enlisted in the United States Navy, where he proudly served aboard the U.S.S. Princeton during the Korean War. He was awarded three Bronze Stars in recognition of his service: for National Defense, United Nations Service, and Korean Service. He completed his tour in May 1955.
Following his military service, Gus pursued higher education with determination and focus. In 1957, he completed an Administrative Course at Lamson's Business College, followed by training at Bryan's Stenotype School in 1959. He later earned certification as a Stenotype Instructor in December 1961.
Gus began his professional career as a court recorder with the Superior Court of the District of Columbia in 1963. He later returned to Tucson, where he served as an Official Court Reporter in state and federal courts from 1979 until his retirement in 1993.
A lifelong learner with a passion for languages, Gus also enjoyed traveling and spending time at the casino with friends and family. His easygoing demeanor and sharp sense of humor made every conversation a joy. He was a beloved presence in the lives of those who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
