Obituary

Guadalupe Alvaro Rivera

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Guadalupe Alvaro Rivera, affectionately known as Al, at age 74, on September 17th, 2023. He departed peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Nogales, AZ, to the late Alvaro Mariscal Rivera and Gloria Amado Rivera, Al's life was a testament to commitment and service. From a young age, he was the bedrock of his family, helping taking care of his brothers and sisters. This nature extended into his adult life where he provided for and protected his wife, children, and eventually his cherished grandchildren. Al's caring nature meant he often worried about others and ensured they were okay even before himself.

He received his early education at Mission View Elementary School, progressed to Wakefield Middle School, and later graduated from Pueblo High School. Al further pursued his passion for learning by obtaining a Bachelor's in Education, a Master's in Education Administration, and a Master's in Business Administration from the University of Arizona. He had a particular love for history, a subject he approached with enthusiasm.

Professionally, Al served with distinction in the United States Air Force. Beyond his military service, he embarked on a dedicated career in education, starting as a teacher. His tenacity and hard work were evident during his career with the Tucson Unified School District. Over the course of his career at TUSD he taught or was an administrator at Palo Verde High School, Pueblo High School, Wakefield Middle School, Doolen Middle School, Sabino High School, and Cholla High School. After Al's retirement from TUSD, he took on the role of the Financial Aid Director at Tohono O'odham Community College where he retired a second time.

Al was also involved in community endeavors. He dedicated his time to coach and mentor youth. Al was proud to be a long-time member of the Pueblo Optimist Club. His love for music was evident to those around him: he often played his guitar and held deep appreciation for Mexican music and jazz. Always one to lighten the mood, Al had a repertoire of jokes that he'd share. He brought smiles to familiar faces and new friends. Al enjoyed breakfast meetups, company at UA football games, and visiting with his friends and family. Travel was another of Al's passions. When he wasn't traveling for conferences, he loved to share the adventure of the open road with his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents and siblings: Gloria and Alvaro Rivera, Yolanda Ontiveros, Jesus Rivera, and Marco Rivera. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years Cecelia; children Martin (Susan), Marisa, and Michele (Andrew); grandchildren Alyssa, Anabella, Andrew Jr. and Abigail; siblings Gloria, Alfonso (Linda), and Raquel.

The funeral service will be held at Santa Cruz Catholic Church on September 27th at 10 AM. Those wishing to send condolences and flowers in his memory are encouraged to do so.

If people wish to make a charitable donation in lieu of flowers, they can send gifts to the American Lung Association.

As we mourn his loss, let us also celebrate a life lived with purpose, honor, and love. Remembering Al, we are reminded of the wisdom and generosity he shared.
