In Loving Memory of Gilberto Bracamonte Castro

January 5, 1928 – June 24, 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Gilberto Bracamonte Castro, who peacefully entered eternal rest on June 24, 2026, at the age of 98.

Gilberto was born on January 5, 1928, to Rafael and Eloisa Castro. He was raised alongside his siblings, Rafael (Josephine) Eloisa (Frank Rosas) and Jessie (Bill Kaiser) sharing a close bond that remained throughout his life.

Gilberto proudly served his country in the United States Army as a World War II veteran. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to protecting his community as a Fire Captain, retiring at the age of 57. In his career he earned the respect and admiration of his fellow firefighters through his courage, leadership, and commitment to helping others.

He married the love of his life, Nellie Ramirez, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion to family. Together they raised four daughters: Laura Urias, Cynthia (Greg) Johnson, Annette Gerardo, and Elizabeth (Jeff) Aksteter. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughters, Annette Gerardo and Elizabeth Aksteter, whose memories remained a treasured part of his life.

Gilberto’s greatest pride was his family. He is lovingly survived by his grandchildren: Lisa Urias, Ramon Gerardo, Nathan Johnson, Nicolette Johnson, Brandon Aksteter, and Alexandra Aksteter. He was preceded in death by his beloved granddaughter, Kristi Urias, whose memory he cherished always.

He was also blessed with great-grandchildren: Mariano Lopez, Karina Lopez, Ramon Gerardo IV, Jack Johnson, and Baby Boy Aksteter, expected in November 2026, each of whom brought—or would bring—him immeasurable joy.

When he wasn’t spending time with family, Gilberto enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He loved hunting and fishing, going to the gym, playing cards with family and friends, watching boxing matches and classic Western movies, cheering on the Arizona Diamondbacks, and faithfully following University of Arizona basketball. These passions created countless memories with those he loved.

Gilberto will be remembered for his quiet strength, humble nature, steadfast work ethic, and unconditional love for his family. Whether serving his country, protecting his community, or simply sharing stories around the table, he lived a life defined by honor, generosity, and compassion. His wisdom, kindness, and sense of humor will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Although he will be deeply missed, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the family he loved so dearly and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable 98 years.

“A hero is someone who has given his life to something bigger than himself.” Gilberto did just that—through his service, his career, and above all, his love for his family.

He will forever be loved, forever remembered, and forever missed.
