Obituary

Francisco Gastelum Dávila began his life journey on July 6, 1929, in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. At the age of 26, he met and married Magdalena "Maggie" Saavedra Carvajal.  Afterwards, with very little money, a smattering of English and big dreams, they moved to Tucson, AZ. Soon, Frank nicknamed "Jamoncillo" learned that the land of milk and honey didn't proffer its fruits easily. With determination, luck and lots of brawn, he undertook any job that would provide for him and his wife in their one-bedroom apartment.  He worked washing dishes, in landscaping, with the railroad, and for Haskell. Lastly, he taught himself the profession of heating and cooling. For over forty hot summers he carried evaporative coolers up and down ladders and hand cut sheet metal to build the air ducts that allowed the circulation of cooled air throughout homes and buildings. "Pancho" or "Frank" as he became known in Tucson grew his business without the need of advertising. It was his strict adherence to detail, quality, perfection, honesty, and integrity that placed him and his work in high demand — he never lacked for want of jobs.  It was also these same virtues, above all respect, that he imparted to his three children. Marta obtained a M.I.M from Thunderbird, Frank Jr. followed in his footsteps after graduating from Sunnyside H.S. and Yvonne worked as an auditor after receiving her bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona. Along the way, Frank became a land and business owner. Not bad for an immigrant with only a third-grade education and a basic knowledge of the English language. He followed boxing, was an avid baseball fan, and read the newspaper on a daily basis. He was well known for his love of food, especially Chinese and seafood. He loved to cook and was always inventing new dishes.

On June 7th, 2023, one month shy of his 94th birthday, Frank embarked on a new adventure. We are certain that both old and new friends will welcome his warm and jovial demeanor and good sense of humor. Missing him are Maggie, his wife of over 68 years, daughters MartaElena Dávila and Yvonne Davila-Paredes (Franklin), granddaughters Dr. Karina Emilia Paredes-Lambdin (Alex) and Jessica Davila, sister, Josefina Hidalgo, nieces, nephews, great grandkids and many friends. Soar free Frank! We love you.
