IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Contreras
Rivera
November 11, 1955 – September 22, 2022
David C. Rivera, Sr. born November 11, 1955. Died September 22, 2022
Our loving and adored father, brother, uncle and friend, David C. Rivera, Sr., died Sept. 22, 2022 surrounded by his four children, grandchildren and loving family. He passed away after a very short, but courageous battle with lymphoma.
David was born in Tucson, AZ on Nov. 11, 1955 to Leopoldo and Maria Rivera. He attended Santa Cruz Catholic School and graduated from Cholla High School in 1973. He joined the US Army after graduation and served as a clerk until his honorable discharge in 1976. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Germany and this allowed him to travel throughout Europe. One such trip took him to Paris, where he got to stand in awe of the Eiffel Tower. He returned to Tucson where he settled down to start a family and begin a long career with locally owned Christie's Appliance. He and his then-wife lived on the South Side of Tucson and raised four children. He spent the next 40 plus years dedicated to his family. David was an avid sports fan and loved cheering on the Arizona Wildcats, New York Yankees, San Diego Chargers and Green Bay Packers. Some of his greatest days were spent watching the Yankees play in person in New York, Boston, San Diego, Phoenix and Dallas. He loved listening to 70s funk, soul and R&B music. He also frequented the billiard scene around Tucson and loved dancing to live music at the Boondocks Lounge. He also loved his trips to San Diego, Coronado Beach and Las Vegas.
After years of various health concerns, he semi-retired in 2018and worked a part time job at Sam Levitz Furniture. He'd take long walks in his neighborhood and took up hiking with his work friends. He finally retired in 2020 and spent the rest of his years enjoying time with family and watching every single New York Yankees game.
He is survived by his children, Abigail Rivera, Andrea Jones (Bill), David Rivera, Jr., and Angela Parrott (Damien), and his three grandchildren, Ysabel Padilla, Emilio Rivera and Dylan Parrott. He is also survived by his siblings Mary Perez, Evelina Anaya (Charlie), Margaret Vasquez, Rose Rivera (Laura), and Paul Rivera (Cindy) and many godchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Leopoldo and Maria Rivera, brothers Rudy Rivera, Richard Rivera and Benjamin Rivera, and his brother-in-law Rudy Perez. We take comfort in knowing he is finally at peace and free from sickness, and reunited in Heaven with his parents and brothers.
A viewing and rosary will be held from 4 pm to 9 pm Friday, Sept. 30 at Carrillo's Tucson Mortuary, 204. S. Stone Avenue. The rosary will start at 6 pm Friday. The funeral mass will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday, Oct. 1 at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone Avenue. A celebration of David's life will follow immediately after mass. All are welcome to attend. His burial will be held at a later date.
