Obituary

Arthur Phillip Barrios unexpectedly passed away at about 9:15 AM on May 1, 2024 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, AZ due to complications related to advanced stages of cancer.

Art was a Tucson native, born in 1954 to Theodore Martinez Barrios and Margarita Jacobo Barrios. While growing up Art developed his love for plants and animals which led to his career and passions. He was in Boy Scouts, raised animals such as golden pheasants and ducks, and spent summers at his Father Ted's ranch in Magdalena, Sonora where he managed cattle breeding. He attended Cragin Elementary School, Doolen Jr. High School, and Catalina High School where his studies included woodworking, welding, auto shop, and FEAST culinary training. He graduated high school in 1972.

On March 19, 1977 Art married the love of his life, Tucson native Gail Lynn Muller, and was faithful to her for 45 years until her death on September 3, 2022. He remained faithful to her, vowing to never re-marry. Together they raised two children, Nataani and Andrew.

Art was a devout Catholic who loved Christ, was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic church, and served as an usher for several years at the St. Augustine Cathedral in downtown Tucson. He had strong family values and provided a loving home for his family. Art also had a profound love and respect for the outdoors and was an avid, ethical hunter and conservationist. Art was an outdoorsman, a hunter education instructor, a guide for other hunters, and a member of Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society where he worked on wildlife habitat and water projects. His innate understanding of animal and wildlife behavior made him a very successful hunter. Combined with his love for cooking and cooking skills learned in FEAST, he and his beloved wife Gail would use his harvested game to make various delicious dishes such as venison tamales, elk roasts, chili colorado, and antelope tacos.

Art followed his father's footsteps in a career doing landscape design, construction, and maintenance. His business provided him an opportunity to use his creative abilities designing custom desert landscapes. Art shared his knowledge as an instructor at Pima Community College. Art and Gail used their creative abilities and ambitions to design and personally build their beautiful custom adobe south-west themed dream home, where they lived until they passed.

Art and his Sweetheart Gail, loved family, scuba diving, exploring remote areas in Arizona, Mexico, and the Old West, and listening and dancing to country music.
