Obituary

Armando Fimbres Montaño, a beloved father, grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully at the VA in Tucson, Arizona on May 29, 2024. He was 89 years old.

Armando was born on January 21, 1935, in Tucson, where he lived a life full of laughter and joy. He attended Safford Elementary, and went off to Salpointe Catholic High School where he was part of the first graduating class of 1953. He proudly served in Japan for the US Army from 1954 to 1957.

During high school Armando started working in various roles, as a sign maker, a painter, and window display artist in downtown Tucson. After honorably discharging from the Army, he worked for PL Daily Roofing Company for 32 years before joining Holy Hope Cemetery, where he served the Diocese of Tucson for 20 years until his retirement.

While working full time, Armando went back to school and received his Associates in Fine Arts from Pima CC.  Armando was a renowned visual artist, specializing in watercolors, and a master carver who enjoyed working on mesquite and alabaster. He has paintings in many private collections throughout the world. Armando designed the poster for the International Mariachi Conference in 1984. And in 2003 was inducted into Salpointes' Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame.

Armando was a man of faith and a lifelong member of St. Augustine Cathedral.

He is survived by his brother, Manuel Montaño; daughters, Maria Christina Montaño and Alejandra Hancock; sons, Armando Jr., Manuel, and Gerald Montaño, and grandchildren, Gabrielle Martinez, Jeff Stewart, and Julian Harper. Armando was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel A. Montaño and Maria Luisa Fimbres; sisters, Angelita Valencia, Maria Montaño, María Luisa Daily, and brothers, Augustine and Jesus Montaño.

A ceremony to honor Armando's life will be held on Saturday, June 8. Visitation will take place from 8:00-9:00 am at Carrillo's Tucson Mortuary, followed by a Rosary at 9:30 am and Mass at 10:00 am at St. Augustine Cathedral. Burial will be at 11:30 am at Holy Hope Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Research in memory of Armando F. Montano.
