Obituary

Antonio Soto "Tony" Yturralde, 81, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2025—just one hour shy of his 82nd birthday—in his hometown of Tucson.

Born on August 14, 1943, Tony proudly served his country in the United States Army as part of the 173rd Airborne. During his service in Vietnam, he was wounded in combat, with a Purple Heart pending in recognition of his sacrifice.

After his military service, Tony built a lifelong career as a skilled steam and pipe fitter and welder, becoming a proud lifetime member of UA Local 469. His work took him across the country, but ultimately he returned home to Tucson, where he retired after 25 years of dedicated service at the University of Arizona.

Tony was a hardworking man whose talents and patience extended far beyond his trade. He embraced life with curiosity and skill, never afraid to try his hand at something new. Over the years, he was a beekeeper, leather craftsman, avid hunter and fisherman, and a gifted marksman. He loved animals and found peace in nature. His wide-ranging interests also included boxing, baseball, classical music and oldies, kite making, coin collecting, and carefully hand-loading his ammunition. Above all, Tony cherished time with his family, whether on impromptu road trips or quiet days at home.

Tony is survived by his loving wife, Maria "Rosa" Yturralde; his daughter, Ydoleena Yturralde; and his granddaughter, Adina Celeste Moraga. He is also survived by his eldest brother Raul (Patricia) Yturralde, his brother Walter (Norma) Yturralde, his sisters Geraldine Yturralde and Joanne Yturralde; his stepchildren Christopher D. Morales, Linda G. Morales (Frank Grijalva), Fayemonique (Javier) Méndez, and Timothy G. Morales; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought him joy. Tony will also be deeply missed by his faithful companion, Nathan, his 15-year-old dachshund.

He was preceded in death by his father Raul P. Yturralde, his mother Eva S. Yturralde, and his sister Patricia Y. Yturralde.

Tony will be remembered for his resilience, dedication, and the many gifts he shared with those who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
