Elena Mejia lived her entire adult life in copper mining communities. As a young woman she moved to Lordsburg, New Mexico where she lived with her aunt and worked for a laundry service ironing shirts for the miners. Met & married Felipe Vargas but was left a young widow with a son Raul and daughter Lipa on the way. She remained in Lordsburg, eventually meeting and marrying Alfredo Mejia. He enlisted in the Navy and she stayed there throughout WWII, giving birth to their daughter Elvia while he was away. The family moved to Miami, Arizona in 1947 where the twins, Alfredo & Alfonso and then Elisa were all born. Many strong friendships were made in Miami, many of them are considered family and remained close. Eldest son Raul graduated high school and the family moved to the 'modern' mining community of San Manuel in 1957 & where she lived the rest of her life. Through raising 5 kids and 2 grandchildren in San Manuel, several generations of San Manuel residents know her quite well. Active in her community, always available to help. She also was known throughout the 60's from working at the popular Triple X Cafe where her Mexican food expertise was favored by the high school kids at lunch and after ball games. Later other generations of kids knew her when she worked for the public schools cafeteria preparing the meals. Many kids thought of her as their Nana too. Well skilled in the home arts. There probably wasn't a baby born that she knew of that didn't receive a blanket. She was always being sought out for her expertise. In her own words, her joys in life were her family, cooking, knitting & crochet.
