Alfredo Mejia's Obituary

Alfredo Mejia, age 70, was born four hours ahead of his brother, Alfonso, in the copper mining town of Miami, Arizona. As the story goes, it was the nurses at the hospital who nicknamed the twins Freddie and Eddie, and it stuck.  Throughout their childhood they were always called Freddie and Eddie until adulthood when they made their way in life separately and chose to use their given names of Alfredo and Alfonso.

Early childhood was spent in the familiar and loving neighborhood of Nash Avenue in Miami. Friendships that survived the test of time and distance when the mine closed and the family moved in 1957 to San Manuel.  The "modern" housing development at that time was owned and maintained by Magma Copper Company, one of the largest copper producers in the world.

The Mejia household was always a whirlwind of activity because of the twins and rarely was one without the other.  Typically their days were spent exploring and hiking in the desert; generally in a pack, swimming at the community pool, evenings of hide n'seek in and around the neighborhood or just hanging out. He also played both Little and Pony League baseball and was an altar boy.   An ideal childhood secure and happy in the fold of the community of San Manuel where everyone knew and looked out for each other.

In high school (class of '67) he excelled in baseball and football but is perhaps best remembered for his positive spirit and joyful personality with a dashing smile and good sense of humor, always at the ready to deliver a funny quip or two. Characteristics he possessed his entire life.

During the Vietnam conflict he joined the Air Force and proudly served from 1968 - 1972 as a Tech Jet Mechanic. After his service he returned to San Manuel and worked for a while at Magma until an opportunity presented itself in Green River, Wyoming and he relocated.  Whilst there he married, welcomed two sons (Daniel & Michael) and enjoyed the Wyoming life of horses, fishing and hunting.  He even won a competition for best handlebar mustache. Shortly after the birth of his youngest child Michael, a divorce compelled him to return with his  sons to San Manuel where grandparents lovingly helped raise them. During this period he was a supportive and devoted son as his parents aged.

Tucson was home for the last sixteen years, enjoying and perfecting his golf game whenever possible.  At the time of his retirement in 2018, he had been employed as Maintennace Supervisor for the Desert Diamond Casino.  He is proceeded in death by his father Alfredo (2002), brother Alfonso (2013), son Daniel (2015) and mother Elena (2015).  Survived by his son Michael (Maica) Mejia, siblings Raul (Marcia) Vargas, Lipa (Joe) Carrasco, Elvia Stork and Elisa Mejia as well as the extended family members of 5 nieces, 4 nephews, 6 great nieces, 4 great nephews, 1 great-great niece and 2 great-great nephews.

Alfredo lived his life in very good health until he unexpectedly started feeling very unwell. Although he had received a terminal diagnosis in January (2019), there was hope treatment would give him a bit more time. However within a month he was starting to decline and found himself back in the hospital but this time advised treatment was no longer an option. He faced this difficult development with grace and courage. Within a couple of days he lapsed into unconsciousness but thankfully did not appear to exhibit any agitation or pain and did not struggle as he drew his final breath.

I fall asleep in the full and certain hope that my slumber shall not be broken and that, though I be all-forgetting, yet shall I not be all-forgotten but continue that life in the thoughts and deeds of those I have loved. (Samuel Butler, English novelist 1835 -1902) .
